What are the connections under the hood (please see attached picture)?

I recently rented a Jeep Compass and was curious to look under the hood.  
There are two large wires with red connectors attached to something on top
of the air cleaner box.  What are these connections and to what are they
attached?  Please see the picture file I uploaded.  Thanks!

Hello, that looks like the ECU (Engine Control Unit). Hopefully this helped you.

Possibly the Ejection Seat. April Fools !

    Jeep Compass won't start after closing hood, starts fine once it has been bump started, no starting problems until you open the hood again, turn the key and all get is silence no clicking noises.
