The vehicle is 40 years old. When is the last time you changed the thermostat? When is the last time you changed the coolant? Have you ever added just water to the radiator? Flush the radiator at least twice with flush chemical. Remove the thermostat first so the water flows freely. Then flush again and again with clear water until it comes out clean. Make sure the heater is on to clean out the core inside the vehicle. Then replace with new thermostat and 50/50 coolant.

Once you do all the above try adding Redline Water Wetter to the coolant. This product should reduce the operating temperature a noticeable amount.
