A dual-clutch standard transmission, often erroneously called an automatic, has two concentric shafts that run two concentric clutch packs, usually one for even and one for odd gears. It was popularized in high-end sportscars, like Ferrari and Audi, and is usually run by a computer operating the clutch, gear changes, and throttle on downshifts. It's a performance design that allows for one gear to engage as another releases and provides the quickest gear changes known to man. Like anything high-end, it has to be properly maintained and tends to be somewhat costly to do so..... I love it. But then, I'm an old guy who drives like a young guy.
