try manually unlocking with the key if it has the key port on the gate, If not you may need to pop the panel on the back and manually release the gate.

my jeep had the same problem. i had to crawl into the back through the back doors, remove the whole back pannel inside of the car, then manually unlock it. it did take quite a bit of time and work. but, mine hasnt had any problems since then, so i would suggest doing that.

When I couldn't open mine, months ago I sprayed it with WD40 from the inside. It unlocked it and is still working.

If you have AAA or emergency road service they will Call a Locksmith for you and you are covered for service up to a certain dollar amount if it cost more then you will have to pay the difference.

I have had the same issue and have found two major causes. The first is that the actual electrical operated lock has failed in the lock position. Several good articles and videos showing how to reach in and manually position the plastic switch to open. The least discussed issue is the one I had. It was purely mechanical. You will need to remove the rear panel and open up the water barrier on the left side of the door for this. If you can observe the lock activating with your fob or door switch, its definitely mechanical. I confirmed this with mine. Once I had access from inside the cargo area, I noticed a 1/2 inch head screw laying on the bottom. Look for that first. Next, locate the handle rod attachment point on the actuator. It usually has a red plastic fitting on it where it attaches to the actuator arm. In reality there are two flat plate arms together. That screw holds them together. If its missing, when you pull on the door handle, the attachment arm moves but the latch release arm does not. You need to push down on both those arms at the same time as you pull on the door handle. That will release the latch. You then need a T30 torx head to remove the three bolts holding the latch in place. Remove the latch and replace the screw (use lock tite to make sure) and put it all back together again.

It took me forever to find a bolt or screw had simply fallen out. Unfortunately there is a nice, open hole below for it to fall into, forever to rattle around in your door. I wish someone would post the diameter of the bolt. I/2' of what size? I've been to to hardware store so many times buying every size imaginable. It's not exactly easy to get to. You can take the back panel off, but still can't get into that area easily. What size bolt is needed would have been helpful. Just figuring out what was wrong took a lot of persistence. I'm a girl. I figured it out on my own eventually. Car repair shops will have you replacing the entire mechanism for a simple, stupid missing bolt.
