Actual mileage TDI vs gas golf

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I am comparing the TDI golf with the gasoline engine golf and wondering if the mpg
is really as low as the EPA number of 31 for the gas model. Anecdotally, you read
that the TDI can get in the 50's. Also, dealers tell me the gas version will get mid
30's. Need to compare them realistically to make a choice. Concerned about the
higher price and availability of deisel also.

While I cannot comment on the gas model's mpg, I can say, once you have diesel....you can never go back! I had an '02 Jetta TDi for 10 years and now have a '11 TDi. My latest mpg for the new car is 55 (Imperial). The fuel is available everywhere throughout the interior of BC. How it is in your area is another question. One of the neat things about the Nav. package is a feature that tells you where the gas stations with diesel are located....very kewl! P.S. Diesel is often cheaper than gasoline around here....just depends on the season. andyb

Thanks for the reply. Maybe we should look at the Jetta diesel as it has same mpg as the Golf TDI. Seems like the reviews of the 2011 Jetta are not great. Downgrades are the interior materials and the numb steering. I guess they are making them cheaper now. I wonder how your 2011 compares to your previous models. We did drive a Golf TDI (2012) yesterday and it was very nice. Good torque, quiet, holds the road, etc. Can't find much wrong, but storage may be an issue. If you can 50 mpg after break-in, like the dealer says, it may be worth the extra money over the gas version in the long run. Diesel is about 35 cents more per gallon here than regular, so it would take me 40,000 miles to save about $1000 over the gas Golf. But you do get other options with the TDI for your money too. I'm a little tired of test drives, but maybe should go try a Jetta just for the added storage. ttyl
