BMW 320i Smokes when changing gears

bmw 320i replaced valve 2 and 3 and car stood for a year. Smokes when
changing gear and when you stop the smoke enters the car through vents.  
Can this be from standing and building up carbon?  I have driven it about 80km
this morning for the first time in a year.  Stressed out as I have been without the
car for about a year as it was standing at the mechanic.

well, that's quite a story- why was it at the mechanic's for a year? what does the mechanic say?
