E36 or E46 compact? Due to engine sharing amongst models the physical fitment of a later model 4 cyl or 6 cyl is easy enough with the prop shaft being the most likely thing to be customized. the engine wiring is the part that could become labour intensive. the puchase of a half cut would ease this issue.

Available engines for a relatively simple straight swap include the N46 new gen 4 cly 2ltr engine, the M54 6 cyl engine in capacities of 2, 2.5 and 3 ltrs and for the adventurous, the S54 3.2ltr M3 engine.
