I recently acquired a 2006 B Class diesel automatic. Can you tell me if it's safe
to coast downhill in neutral, please? I've found several, contradictory comments
elsewhere so I'm looking for a definitive answer. Many thx
Large diesel trucks frequently coast downhill, but they do it in gear. Besides, coasting in neutral is illegal in most states. Why? In addition to being unsafe, you'll use more gas than coasting in gear. The engine can cut off fuel if there is low load or no load on the engine. Because you are in gear, the wheels will keep turning the engine so that it doesn't stall.
I wasn't clear, I meant safe for the engine
In neutral, the engine isn't connected to the driveline. so how could this be harmful to the engine itself? It's like idling in neutral.
