3.0 Ranger vs Windstar engine

Asked by Mgstangman Jan 22, 2018 at 09:28 PM about the 1997 Ford Ranger

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 3.0 out of a 95 Windstar with very low
miles.  Will it work in a 97 Ranger?  I looked up
reman long blocks and found the Windstar is
part#DFN4 and Ranger is #DFN5. The only thing I
can find is that they specify rwd & fwd.    What
would make the difference?

Compare the engines. The Windstar is FWD and so the engine accessories and engine mounts are probably different but you could swap yours over to it. If the engine mount locations are different due to the FWD set up then it won't work.

I don't have the Ranger yet. I found a nice Ranger that needs an engine but I want to make sure my Windstar engine will work. I don't mind taking it down to just a long block and swapping everything if it will work. I don't want to buy the Ranger then find out that the engine won't work do to being fwd vs rwd.
