My 09 truck came with 18 in wheels. What changes if I put 17 inch on it?

Question type: General

I don't like the low profile tire selection in the 18 inch options. I like a taller tire look which
I see on 17 inch rims. It appears that they fill the wheel-wells up better and to me that
looks better. I'd like to change to them if it doesn't' affect my speedometer,or anything
else. Can you tell me if its a good or bad idea?

Are the 18 inch rims original to the vehicle or were they added on later, it makes a difference with the speedo, but not to a great degree.

Oopse, reread the post, seems the 18 inch are original. There will be a slight error in the speedo, but not much. Check the net and you will find the mathematical formula which will tell you how much.

The short answer goes thusly. Measure the diameter of the original tires and rims and rims from tread to thread through the middle. Do the same for the tires you anticipate placing on the vehicle. You'll need that number to do the calculation.

Okay, Thanks! Would it be possible to combine a taller tire with a shorter rim (17 inch) and still have the same diameter to not affect the speedometer? I hope this makes sense.

The critical measurement is the diameter of the tire from tread to tread. The diameter determines the circumstance of the wheel with the tire attached. The speed of the vehicle is determined by how many rotations the wheels complete for a certain speed. For example: If a 15 inch rim and tire has a diameter of say 36 inches and and a 18 inch rim and tire has a diameter of 36 inches, there is no effect on the speedo.

correction. The diameter determines the circumference of the wheel.
