Problems with fuel pump and distributor

Asked by carlariner Feb 04, 2014 at 06:28 PM about the 2001 Honda Accord

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My mechanic replaced my fuel pump which didn't solve my problem. The problem ended up being a relay issue. Two years and about 10,000 miles later my check engine light came on. I took it back to the same shop and he told me I needed a new fuel pump because I didn't drive my car enough. He also said I needed a new distributor even though I was not experiencing any mechanical issues. In general how often does a Honda require a new fuel pump? Would problems with a fuel pump and distributor show up on a diagnostics test? He could not produce either of the parts that he supposedly took off my car. I had two other mechanice look at the new pump. I believe there was supposed to be 8 bolts on the pump but 5 were missing and the others were totally rusted and corroded. Does any of this make sense.

Main relay was the culprit...through out this whole scenario. It can work perfectly one day...then temperatures change and it will not trigger the fuel pump (causing mechanics to replace the pump...sadly not the relay). The fuel pump is a big job...lots of things to go wrong or in this case to be short cut....but that relay (once you know where it is) can be replaced in 2 minutes....you WILL KNOW IF IT WORKS.....you can hear the clicks and you can insure that the check engine light does not stay illuminated on the final click....after a little practice/observation...it is gravy. And 9 out of 10 got to the relay!
