Cant find the right AC compressor for 89 Cutlass Ciera

Asked by Jul 20, 2017 at 09:40 AM about the 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Doesn't sound it should be such a hard thing to do,
but I have contacted multiple parts places and
when I give them the info for my 2.5L 89 Olds
Cutlass Ciera, they come up with the same WRONG
part every time. The correct part, which I pulled off
my car has 2 slightly recessed connections to the
AC lines, but the part that every salvage yard and
parts store tries to sell me has one slightly
recessed port and another thats recessed about a
half an inch.  Needless to say, this prevents the
high pressure line from forming a proper seal,
rendering the whole system useless.   Can anyone
out there tell me if there's a reason that every
single salvage yard and used parts store is finding
the wrong part? And any suggestions for how I can
locate the right part?  Thanks.  On the right in the
pic is the correct part taken directly out of my
vehicle.  On the left is the part I got from a salvage
yard that, so I'm told, also came directly out of an
89 cutlass ciera 2.5l.   -.-

My information shows that shows that Oldsmobile used four or five different A/C compressors on the car you have. You can only replace it with the SAME EXACT model and manufacture that you currently have. Parts guys should know that. So go to Rock Auto online and locate the correct one and then you'll have an exact match. Looks like they cost about $187 plus shipping. No core return require so these may be new, not rebuilds. You can buy it anywhere once you have the correct name and numbers. Check my info carefully as I do not want to cause you any more headaches. Good luck my friend.

Thank you, that was a good answer. Unfortunately, I was unable to confirm that Rock Auto had the correct part after searching through their database. Thus, I couldn't find the numbers for it. Additionally, my compressor has seen too much wear and the label can no longer be read. All I have to go on is photos of my current compressor and any photos I find for compressors on the web. It seems, however, that many parts dealers dont post pictures of the connection-side of the compressor, which, as far as I can tell, is the only major difference between the right and the wrong parts. This whole thing seems to be a wild goose chase. Thank you for your answer, though. I imagine that in less obscure situations, that would be a great resource.
