Be careful, running your vehicle with the low fuel light will eventually cause the fuel pum to go bad. The fuel pump uses fuel to lubricate it during operation and a low tank will result in more wear. If both posters simply divided the remaining miles they drive by the gas mileage they average they should have a much closer estimate of the actual amount of fuel they have in the vehicle when the light comes on. You have to take things automakers say with a grain of salt sometimes. For example many car makers claim much higher mileage than vehicles actually can be expected to acheive. This could be a marketing ploy or be due to the auto maker having recored their data under the most extreme fuel saving conditions. When you run a car with the tank near empty the fuel pump will be exposed to additional wear. Gas is a liquid and sloshes around in the tank, the fuel pumps are not submersed in fuel all of the time when the tank is low on fuel and excessive wear will result. My wife learned this lesson the hard way about 14 months after I mentioned what would happen if she continued to run her car nearly empty before refilling.
