i have an 82 f100 4.9 300 she has vacuum leaks but in idle runs great timing was set to 10 degrees and carb was rebuilt and cleaned by a local carb shop but the truck itself has trouble starting runs in idle i can mash the gas no problem revs up with peddle but every time i put it in gear it stalls any ideas?

Even though the carb has been rebuilt it sounds like it isn't setup properly, I'd take it back and have it checked.

these are the things i have narrowed it down to carb is a possibility but vaccum advance, fuel pump maybe i doubt it though (fuel filters brand new), and torque converter is a slim possibility.

Ok a vacuum advance won't make it stall at idle, torque converters usually lockup and when that happens you can't even get it too move, fuel pump will usually not deliver fuel when you driving down the road when they go bad, 300 inline 6 is notorious for intake gasket leaks, so you might want to check that.

it dosent drive at all and i know it has a major exhaust leak so im assuming it has an intake leak as well but i drove it home from chief land Florida to Pinellas county which is a 200 mile drive my buddy decided to adjust the car and timing im not sure what else he did and he does not remember since then iv replaced the entire ignition system done timing and adjusted the carb

So if you hold the idle speed up with the throttle can you get it too move?

no

it just stalls out

and its a fight to start it up

The hard start cold will be a choke problem, the second you touch the gas pedal cold the choke should snap shut, check out YouTube on carb setup for your rig. So now it won't move then it is highly possible that the torque converter has locked up.

but if im in park the car lets me hit the gas and rev it

78,395

When your in park or neutral there is no load on the transmission so naturally it will rev up.

5

ok what is the best way to check the torque converter without removing it if their is a way at all

5

iv had no problems slipping overheating or anything tranny related that im aware of

Jack it up and block it, start the engine in neutral, give the rear wheels a good spin by hand and quickly drop it into drive and see if it catches and spins the tires under its own power, you may have to raise the idle speed with the throttle pedal to overcome the initial load, once they start to spin on their own slowly apply the brakes till the tires stop and if the converter its locked it will die.
