Where did you find a station that has regular unleaded? Most all pump fuel today has this ethanol garbage put in it. So to answer your question, yes you can run it, you might consider adding what they call lead substitute in the fuel just to help with keeping the valves and guides lubed. Unless the heads have already been modified for unleaded fuel then you won't need the additive.
All stations in Ohio have unleaded gas and a one of the three select buttons is labeled regular. Shouldn't have a problem getting it.
I guess I got confused about your question, out here you can get regular unleaded without ethanol but they won't pump it into a car, gas cans only. That is where I got confused.
With a 1972 car, you have no problem running unleaded fuel. The U.S. Government mandated that all cars built for 1972 had to be compatible with the unleaded fuel that was coming on the market. As for the octane, yes, you should be fine with regular. If you experience knocking, the first thing is to verify that the timing is in spec. After that, up the octane rating until the knock is gone, but no higher than necessary. That aside, be prepared. Any old rubber components in the system will be damaged by the ethanol. It would be wise to change the rubber sections of the line. They are pretty straightforward on the LTD: There are 2 pieces of flex on the sending unit, one to the pick up and one for the vent. There is another at the front of the car, that connects the steel line to the fuel pump, and then there are 2 little pieces on each side of the fuel filter. You may also find you have problems with the float in the carburetor, as well as the gaskets. If you do, have the carb rebuilt with a modern rebuild kit and you'll be just fine from there. If this is a car that is not driven regularly, be sure to add fuel stabilizer to each tank, and modern gas begins to break down in as little as 2 months.

If it has had a valve job during the introduction of unleaded fuel then it won’t hurt the engine, what it will hurt is the rubber hoses and the internals in the carb, so replace all the rubber fuel lines with the new multi-fuel hoses and get a carb kit with the new gaskets for E10 fuel and a new E10 resistive fuel pump and that should do it.
