Gas mileage for a 1973 ford ranchero with a 429?

Asked by Jan 01, 2017 at 01:09 AM about the 1973 Ford Ranchero

Question type: General

I currently have a 73 ranchero 500 with a 429. I
honestly don't know what my mileage is since I'm
still trying to get it on the road but I haven't found
anything about it on any forums, usually just on gts
and 351 clevelands. I'm told I'll be lucky if i get
around 10 MAX. Any thoughts about this and any
thoughts about how I can improve mileage? Also
the engine is stock except for the edelbrock 460
intake manifold, and the 750 cfm Holley double
pumper.

In those days people weren't concerned about gas mileage. But here's a pretty good comparison. I had a '66 Cadillac with the V8 429. The 429 was a Cadillac engine before it was a Ford engine. I got 8 to 10 MPG around town and 17 MPG on the highway. HTH. -Jim

Put a high gear ratio third member in it and you should be able to get better than 10 on the highway. Also install a high energy after market ignition system and maybe a Quadrajet carb.
