I have a 2003 TL Acura with 58k miles. Mechanic says I need to replace timing belt because of its age, not mileage. Is this true?

I would say yes because the belt becomes brittle over time and your is 12 years old, I would do and since he has it open I would have he replace the water pump.

Yes, Joe is absolutely correct, you should feel lucky that you have not had the failure. I wouldn't do this ASAP.
