Do you see signs of oil leaking from around the top of the engine? If so then the valve cover gaskets need replacing. These gaskets are not normally all that hard to replace. That price sounds a little high but not all that bad. The head gasket is totally different and is a major job to replace.

The valve cover gaskets are on top of the engine under the coil packs they aren't hard to replace just a little time
