factory defaults for 88 dodge ram 318v8

Asked by Jan 29, 2017 at 04:46 AM about the 1988 Dodge RAM 150 Short Bed 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Was wondering my automatic 4 wheel drive
88 dodge ram factory built with a tow
package 3 inch lift and (throttle body fuel
injected engine they only made for 2 years)
has a factory default transmission and
transfer case because iv heard with these
specific trucks in 1988 the engine did not
match up with the transmission when it was
factory made which caused my 4x4 to not
engage and in 2 wheel drive my 1st gear has
always been known to slip my mechanic
also said that was a common thing when
dodge first made these trucks the first gear
would slip so my question is is this true and
if so wouldnt the dodge dealership have to
replace their manufacturing defaults free of
charge given they are responsable for the
transmission going out and the 4 wheel
drive not working?

That was back in 1988, 29 years ago. There could have been an issue with the trans not matching up, and while there might have been an engagement issue can be debated. So while I can help you search to see if in fact there was an issue from the beginning on a known engagement issue with the 4x4 is mute at this point. You mentioned for only 2 years, so Dodge must have corrected the issue, and maybe helped owners with a fix for a few years With that being said and to answer your question, your wasting your time to try and get Dodge to fix your truck for free. BTW: if your truck is clean it's worth only around $2500 max.
