Lexus RX350 2010 vx 2012

Hi,  I currently have a 2004 RX330 and it's been a great car.  It has 143,000
miles on it and I'm considering purchasing a 2010 or 2012.  The reason I am
considering a newer model is because the heat and air work intermittently.  
The heat will come on then will stop working.   It's like it's cycling.  I noticed
when the heat sensor on the dashboard says the car is Hot, the heat won't
work.  But then once the car cools down the heat will come on.   This all
happens while driving.   I haven't taken it to a shop yet to get an estimate,
but I assume it will be expensive.

So my questions are:
1. Are there any major issues with the 2010 or 2012 I should be aware of?
2. What does the heat situation sound like the issue is?  Any idea if it will be
expensive to fix?

I"m basically trying to figure out if I should just put the money i would spend
on the repairs to a newer used model.

I too have a 2004 Lexus RX330 with 85,000 miles. I've never had a problem with it. I just passed it on to my daughter because it's getting older and the dashboard just spontaneously cracked in two places. It's always been garaged so I don't know why this happened. I just bought a 2012 RX350 to replace it and I love it. I haven't come across any issues in this model. I would get an estimate on fixing that heating problem. If it's too much - get the newer model. I once spent $3,000 fixing the air conditioning on a fairly new Honda and it never got cold enough after that. Always regretting trying to fix it.

Try purging air out of the cooling system. Sounds like the coolant level may be low.

Since the 2010 and 2012 are the same body style, I'd opt for the 2012 if you don't mind paying a little extra. We have the 2010 which is the first model year of the changeover from the 2004-2009 body style (2004-2006 was the RX330/2007-2009 was renamed RX350 but had the same body style as previous 3 years). While my wife loves the 2010, we noticed they fixed a few minor flaws and added some extra features for 2011 & 2012 that we would've appreciated. Since Lexus makes minor changes to the RX every 3 years and then major changes to the RX every 6 years, we recommend buying at least the "middle model" of any 3-year run.
