05 suziki XL 4wd locks up when trying to go forward

Asked by Chase May 14, 2020 at 01:56 PM about the 2005 Suzuki XL-7 LX III 2WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

im working on my friends XL-7 and he was low on
transmission fluid. Id like to say hes mechanically
illiterate, but im trying to teach him. Anyways we
topped it off and he said he was having some
problem when he goes into 4wd  but was not specific,
so i said well put it in 4wd when you leave and at the
stop sign (half a block away) put it back into 2wd. I
figured maybe being low on transmission fluid maybe
it was having a problem engaging. He backed out and
put it in drive the rear wheels pushed him a good 2
feet and the front wheels were completely locked.  im
hoping something is stopping it from engaging
because its low on fluid and not that its completely
blow out. he put it in park, 2wd, and drove normally
then on.
so i found out the problem he was having before was
somehow driving on a 35mph street he switched it to
4wd and essentially slowed a halt..where he switched
it back to 2wd(his words not mine)

im thinking dump the front diff and see what comes
out if anything except metal flakes, and top off the
other 2 diffs if need be. does that sound right to yall? i
just like hearing other peoples thoughts to make sure
im not missing something simple. he said theres a lot
of engine codes im trying to have them sent over and
ill add to this post.
