2005 VW Jetta 2.5L
My car overheated one day, no smoke
at all. The mechanic who looked at my
car said it was the water pump. It only
over heated the one time. But now my
son in law is telling me the labor is too
much cuz the entire engine needs to be
pulled. And the car isn't worth the
effort. But it ran beautifully until this
one incident. Is there hope or is the car
done? What is the best option here and
what can I expect to spend?
The engine doesn't have to be removed, but it does have to be loosened and a lot of stuff has to be removed. If your car is in average condition, cost to do this might be close to the value of the car. I'd visit other mechanics to see if the problem is in fact the water pump, as this is the go-to diagnosis for mechanics who want to charge for a big job. If you like the car and it's in otherwise excellent condition, consider this before you think of buying another used car: known versus unknown.
