Drive gear won't always engage

My 96 ES300, is acting up. It switches through REV and N ,
just fine, but frequently it stays in Rev , even though I'm in
Drive on shifter.  Once it engages, it runs great , but
occasionally 1st gear is not as strong. When it does not
engage , I shift back to P, to R, to N..give it a Rev on pedal,
then brake and go into D.. this circus works most of the
time
