Clockspring

Asked by Feb 10, 2017 at 09:54 PM about the 2000 Audi A4 2.8 quattro Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just changed the clockspring on my Audi
A4 Quatro 2000, (I had the basic
symptoms of a broken clockspring: horn
didn't work and airbag light was on)

After I changed the clock spring, the horn
started to work again, but my airbag light is
still on, I drove the car for a few miles and
nothing changed, what could be the issue?
I plugged in scanning tools and for some
reason they don't recognize my car, I tried
multiple scanners, and even brought the
car to AutoZone and they were no help AT
ALL.

The airbag system is controlled by a different computer than the average code reader can communicate with. The average code reader communicates with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) only. You need to scan the airbag or SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) computer to get the code to fix it. Also, some clock springs must be set before installation. On my '94 Ford Escort, for example, the clock spring had to be turned one and one half turns clockwise before installation. The bad news is that, if this is the case for you, the new clock spring may be ruined now! HTH. -Jim
