clutch not staying engaged

I have 06 mustang gt. iv been having a problem with my
clutch not staying engaged. it is causing my transmission
to lock up and I can't shift out of that gear. I have to turn the
car off and let it sit for a few minutes before it will work
again. any  answers are appropriated
