do i use 10w40 or 10w30 oil?

5w30 or 5w20 if it is a pretty late model. Year make and model would be helpful.

A lot of new cars call for 0W-20 oil so we can't give you advice except to check your owners manual. The oil filler cap may say what weight oil to use.
