Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Need help diagnosing a problem with a 1980 Jeep Cherokee which always runs hot in traffic, but never overheated until yesterday. Once it cooled a little I was able to drive it and park (at the airport). After a short time I tried to restart and it cranks but hitting the gas does nothing.  IT will not start at all. I intend to take out and/or replace thermostat, but I have no idea why it won't start, or why the gas pedal does nothing.  Please help.
