What would cause a B2300 Mazda pickup to stop while driving? Suspected timing belt, but it's fine. Cam is good also. Any ideas?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Driving home down interstate last night and truck just quit and started making
noise like it had broken timing belt.  Timing belt is good.  Cam is also good.
Now it will turn over but sounds like it's running on 2 cylinders only.

Thanks.... I'll pass the info onto my husband. He's now thinking perhaps a lifter has gone bad? He was able to get it started this morning, but it sounds like a tank now! Definitely not driving it til we get to the bottom of this.
