How do I fix a misaligned tensioner pully?

Asked by Splixdinky Mar 27, 2019 at 12:37 PM about the 2006 Acura TL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have had a squeak under my hood for probably almost 2 years now. And I
think if has caused issues in the past, (possibly unrelated) but ive had my
alternator burn out and I had to replace it. However, that did not fix the
squeak. I had a new belt in and that did not fix it either. I have done the spray
bottle test so that leads me to believe there is a misalignment not a
bearing/pully issue. I took a closer look at the belt and I saw the belt was
moving back and forth on the tensioner pully. and the flat side of the belt is
kinda melted in some spots. My question is how do i fix the problem? Do i
just move the belt around? do i adjust the tensioner? do i replace the pully? I
cant find the answer anywhere... please help a girl out!

Find the bad pulley; might be as easy as using a length of tubing in your ear and searching with the other end (I have a stethoscope for this). Then replace the defective pulley. But, because your belt shows signs of dragging/friction by melted spots, I'd recommend you have a mechanic review the belt system. Pulleys might be out of line, too.
