2006 Toyota Camry Possible Timing Chain Issue

Asked by Jan 04, 2017 at 06:20 AM about the 2006 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Timing chain has maybe gone in my 2006 4 Cyl Camry. Mechanic who
diagnosed it did $800 worth of other repairs first which didn't fix the problem
(car won't start), has finally discovered there is no compression in the engine
and has diagnosed this as the problem. Any Toyota mechanics out there have
any other suggestions or ideas ?

One could verify if the timing has jumped or the timing chains have broke before just tearing into it. It is possible the timing chain has jumped time, but it is a chain, the chain guides and chain tensioner would have to be extremely worn.

How many miles on this Toyota?

What Engine?

Woops...I see it's a 2AZ-FE...Toyota's famous Oil Burner. Have you checked/changed the Engine oil lately? "no Compression"...if that means the Compression Gauge reads near ZERO on each Cylinder....indeed.....camshaft must be out of time. Do you remember any Warning Lights ON/Flashing when the Engine runs? Toyota has several Service Bulletins addressing an issue with the Variable Valve Timing mechanisms on this Engine.

Hi Tony The Oil light came on while we on the highway at 100kph , then withing about 2 minutes while finding somewhere safe to pull over all the lights lit up and engine shut off. I have had the cam shaft sensor replaced as that was the first diagnosis on the computer scan reader, then also replaced crank angle sensor as was told they can often go together. After these didn't fix the problem they tested valve compression and found none. The oil was burnt up dry and lumpy. Have since refilled it. Cheers

Hi Bob About 190,000km (I think that's about 120,000 miles)

Ahhh........the rest of the story. Did you receive a notice from Toyota concerning "Excessive Oil Consumption".....and....an Extended Warranty on this Engine up to 150,000 miles? "oil was burned up and dry"..."lumpy"....sounds like time for an Engine Replacement. Let us know what you decide to do next. Very interesting history on this vehicle.

No never received notice from Toyota about "Excessive Oil Consumption".....and....an Extended Warranty on this Engine up to 150,000 miles, I just don't know of I want to spend hundreds more dollars on towing and having mechanic to valve tests etc. just to tell me the engine needs to be replaced. I have enquired on a second hand engine quote from wreckers and I'm looking at around $4500 fitted which is almost the value of the car . Will keep posted.

Well.....Bobby....what ever happened with the issue on this vehicle?

It's sitting in my yard surrounded by knee high grass LOL

Well...let's see. This vehicle is about 10 years old....in another 10 years....you might have yourself a nice wild life refuge...and an Eagle's nest on the roof.
