Shifter related rollover accidents

Asked by May 30, 2018 at 08:02 AM about the 2019 Volvo XC40

Question type: General

In George Kenndy's article he states "It's way too easy to accidentally shift the XC40 into Neutral,
which is relevant in light of recent shifter-related rollover accidents."

I'm curious if he meant "roll off accidents"? I know FCA has a similar shifter (though the Volvo park
is a specific button rather than a selection on the shifter, which would be an inherent
improvement). I had a customer bring this concern up to me and I'm trying to get educated on any
potential concern. The article confused the customer to thinking the risk was specific to the XC40,
which hasn't been shown to be true to my knowledge, and further, I believe the type of accident in
question is completely different, and with Volvos improved operation of the independent park
button. The author could like the electronic shifters or not, but the sort of mistakes customers
make with the FCA design has been removed from the Volvo design so a scary sounding
suggestion isn't proper, especially when mistakenly siting rollover risks rather than roll off and
ambiguous wording.

If I'm incorrect (it certainly happens!) could you get me some sourcing so I can better educate
myself? Thanks!
