2004 lincoln towncar

the air conditioner makes a humming noise when it comes on and while it is
running  and also comes on every10 to 15 seconds. we have added freon often
as it seems to be leaking out this does not seem to help.does the unit need to
be replaced

It pointless to add refrigerant to an AC system that is leaking it. Take it to an AC shop and checked for leaks. A little leak can drain the system in no time. BTW when the refrigerant levels are low, the AC compressor will cycle on and off, which you describe yours as doing. Stop wasting money on those AC recharge cans and get the leaks fixed.
