2017 Traverse sputters wildly without gas cap

Asked by Mandy Jan 13, 2020 at 05:40 PM about the 2017 Chevrolet Traverse

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently, our 2017 Traverse has started acting
up. If the vehicle is still running when we take
the gas cap off to pump gas, the entire vehicle
starts sputtering a lot and the interior lights
start blinking (not sure about the headlights,
etc). Sometimes it just keeps doing this and
other times it will actually end up dying which
takes several seconds and cranking it a few
times before it will eventually start again. Once
the cap is back on and it's started, it stops
sputtering and seems to be driving fine any
other time. The other day my husband filled
the tank and we started to leave, it backfired
after finally cranking it several times and
getting it to start! What’s causing this?!
