What would make a 1995 ford mustang gt 5.0 only get up to 2000 rpm going down road ,it just dont have the power it should and kinda backfired a little ?

Backfiring is an ignition timing issue. Check the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and the timing. Should be 10 degrees advanced.
