2010 Ford Explorer won't shift out of park

Asked by Jul 27, 2018 at 01:36 PM about the 2010 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello. I am really hoping that someone out there can help me out with this. I
have a 2010 Ford Explorer (automatic transmission) that very recently has
begun having problems sometimes shifting out of park, problem being that it
just won't shift at all. This happens very randomly, and sometimes the car
can go for a day or two with no shifting problems while another day it might
get stuck in park more than once!

When it gets stuck in park like that I just sit and wait and pray while trying to
shift every few seconds (and no, I'm not forcing it at all), and so far, after
waiting for however many random amount of minutes, it's always eventually
shifted into gear. Something is obviously wrong though and I'm very worried
because I don't have a lot of money to try and fix this and the Ford
dealership wants $99 just to take it in and perform diagnostics on the

Has anyone else had this issue or have any suggestions and/or advice? I am
a very non-mechanical person, but is there anything I can do to try to remedy
this problem myself? Thanks for your time.
