Alternator failure Dodge 2002 Caravan

Asked by Marshall Apr 09, 2016 at 12:55 PM about the 2002 Dodge Caravan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Battery light comes on sporadically.  Then yesterday the engine started racing
and the transmission seemed to not be engaged. Then it would go back to
normal and a while later would do the same thing.  Is the alternator failing and
loosing signal to transmission or what?   Any info would be appreciated.

On a computer controlled rig as this one you need stable voltage, if your alternator is varying voltage as the light is suggesting it can have all kinds of driveability problems, however the alternator is also computer controlled on this vehicle so I would recommend that you have the vehicle "live data" scanned to find out if it is an alternator or a computer problem.
