Most likely, this is a dirty idle air control valve sticking closed at startup and the accelerator opened makes up for this. This also affects how the engine behaves when coming to a stop. This could also involve the throttle position sensor and/or the fuel pressure regulator. You need a mechanic to diagnose and fix this.

When it did fire up did it blow black smoke for a little bit? If so then it was flooded, and the fact that it won’t stay running could mean that it’s is trying to run too rich, as mentioned above the fuel press regulator can cause this symptom, remove the vacuum hose form the fuel regulator and just turn on the key, do not start the engine, if fuel sprays out of the regulator where the vacuum lines was connected then you have found your problem, replace the regulator and reconnect the vacuum hose and restart the engine, now you may have to hold the throttle wide open as before to get it to fire up the first time, but after that it should fire up and run as it should if that is all that is wrong with it. I have seen a few of these that after the regulator was replaced the check engine light came on with a rich code, usually a good drive at highway speeds will clean off the O2 sensors and the code will no longer be reoccurring.
