That sputtering us usually caused by a car that hasn't been properly maintained or repaired. Could be a failing fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or dirty injectors. Or maybe old worn out sparkplugs. Or a failing Mass Airflow or Oxygen sensor. Or maybe a failing catalytic converter or exhaust leak.

Check for unmetered air leaks in the intake system, TPS may have a blank spot in the sweep, you might consider getting the vehicle live data scanned.
