Not going into drive but does reverse

Asked by Shawna Mar 17, 2024 at 05:27 PM about the 2001 Honda Accord Coupe EX V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My husband changed the solenoids and fixed our
honda the night before he passed away after it had
been sitting for a week but not exactly sure what all
he had done tho. When we bought it, it had slipped a
little but we had started manually shifting bc it
slipped pretty bad when we pushed the gas pedal. We
shifted from 2nd to drive but couldn't 1st to 2nd bc
1st was out and it didn't slip as bad as it would every
other time. I forgot about the slipping right after we
bought it and used cruise control, after hitting about
35 miles per hr, the entire time I pushed the
accelerator on the steering wheel while it was on it
didn't slip not one time no matter how soft or hard we
pushed it. 2 days after he had fixed it I was on my way
to the funeral home to plan his funeral, I was pulling
up from a hill and it slipped in drive n wouldn't move
but would go good in reverse. Please I love my car

Sounds like the transmission went bye bye. But a good transmission shop can do stand alone testing to find out if it’s electronic or an actual hardware failure.

If the car will move in reverse but won’t go forward, the likely cause is worn out solenoids, clutches, and/or gears. Check the transmission fluid, as a low level is a potential reason for making the car move in reverse only. A repair or rebuild is likely in your future, but for a 23 year old Honda, evaluate the rest of the car prior to committing this much cash, as all the needed repairs together might exceed the value of the car.
