2011 Camry glove box hydraulic strut

2011 Camry glove box strut fell out when replacing cabin air filter and removing
it from the box door, and cannot figure out what it attaches to to keep it in place.  
Also, in messing with it I dropped it down in the hole that it apparently inserts
into and cannot reach it.  Any suggestions on either of these questions?

That retainer broke and needs to be replaced; it's just a part. If you bend it, it tends to snap off. It can be accessed from behind the dash through the glove box opening.
