Car not starting and error message showing start key

Parked my 2001 CLK Mercedes. Came back to it an hour later and put the electronic key in the ignition and it would not turn. A "REMOVE KEY" light came on and it would not allow me to turn it. I tried turning the steering wheel to unlock the steering but nothing resolved the problem.
