Engine cooling possible issue

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Good day, all,  My mini gave me a code PO128  Which states: Coolant Thermostat temp bellow thermostat regulating temperature.  Question: When the thermostat decides to go wayward, will the thermostat remain in the open position? (Like the newer thermostats that go bad, stay in the open position.)  Thank you for your time, in advance. Have a Good Day!

Some do and some don’t, a thermostat that is not closing properly will sometimes cause the check engine to turn on, so if your getting a code, plus the age of the vehicle I would say replace the thermostat. If you can find one that will go open if it fails then by all means get it.

That code is telling us the engine is not reaching operating temperature within the specified time limit from a cold start up. Usually 10 minutes is the time limit. This is caused by the thermostat being stuck open, partially open, or opening too soon. Replace the thermostat with the correct temperature thermostat and clear the code. Hope that helps! Jim
