My starter is staying engaged after starting and when key is in the off position. Please advise. Thanks

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There are times when trying to start my 4-runner and there will be a clicking noise without starting.  Then, the other day, the started stay on while the engine was running.  Then, I tried to turn the engine off and the starter wouldn't disengage.  Please, if you have some advice please share.  Do I need a new starter?  Or, could there be another problem.
Thanks
Jeff

You can take a look at some other things giants22 but I suspect that it's all going to circle around to a failed or failing starter. The starter solenoid is probably the other thing you should consider. It's possible, but unlikely, that the starter switch (on the steering column) has failed. You need to get on top of this however because if the starter motor isn't the problem it soon will be if it continues to run after the engine starts. Good luck!
