issue with 2005 Subaru Baja transmission

I made the mistake of draining the AT fluid instead of the oil from my 2005
Subaru Baja.  I didn't realize it and overfilled the oil and then started the car
and when I put it in gear to move the car, the trans did not engage.  I then
realized I made a mistake, added fluid to the trans (thru the trans dipstick)
drained out the extra oil but still the trans did not engage.  Is the
transmission ruined?  Is there some sensor that needs to be replaced or
something else I can do?

Did you put engine oil in your transmission? If so you should get a transmission flush.

Thanks for your response, but I did not put engine oil into the transmission. I put transmission fluid into what I thought was the transmission dipstick tube. Turns out (despite no where did I ever see that there is actually a differential dipstick and tube) I put the transmission fluid into that!!! Turns out, Subaru did a good job of hiding the transmission fluid dipstick (and mine was completely covered in schmutz). I called a local transmission place and they actually talked me through where to look, I found it, put the fluid into the right fill tube, and wallah, the trans works. Now I have to drain the differential!!! I'm going to stick to just washing the car from now on and let the experts do the work. And yes, all you car gurus can call me a dipstick!!!!
