Stalling in second...?

I bought a 2004  Ion 2 Coupe new. Recently it started stalling in second gear. It stalled four times this evening and the power steering went out at the same time. The radio still played and all the lights were still on. Is this something to do with the battery, or is this sounding like a major ordeal?
