Engine oil level

Asked by NVRGVUP61 Sep 18, 2019 at 05:25 PM about the 2002 Porsche Boxster S

Question type: General

I have a 2002 Porsche Boxster S
recently had the oil changed and
filter my receipt shows that they put
the right amount of oil in it 8 and 1/4
I believe but my gauge on the dash
maxes out and when I look at the
stick which I believe more than the
gauge is just a little over the fill mark
on that should I go back and have
them drain that extra out

A quarter of a quart over will not hurt anything. Which gauge is maxed out?

the dash gauge it's an electronic gauge that when you turn the key to the on position before starting it will show you the oil level and gives you a safe range but I learned early on that that gauge is all over the place depending how level the car is sitting but has never really shown it max out like it is now that's why I don't depend on it I go by the stick and it was a little over the full line on the stick I believe if it is over it would probably be a half a quart

Clearly the dip stick is best but as always check the oil level when the car is on the level! I would probably remove the excess if it is 1/2 quart or more.

What would be the best way to drain that excess out the filter or the pan I've heard that the filter holds about 1 Cup

You can use a suction gun with a narrow tube designed to go down the dip stick tube or I suppose you could remove the oil filter and drain it.
