1995 Pontiac Sunfire grinding noise when trying to start car

Asked by shumphrey50 Aug 11, 2011 at 02:38 PM about the 1995 Pontiac Sunfire 2 Dr SE Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Up until last night, my car started fine. It was quick and loud however. But last night it started getting a grinding/whinning sound when I tried to start it. This is now happening intermittedly. Sometimes it turns over just fine but other times I get the grinding/whinning sound. Does anyone know what this problem could be ?

It is probably worn or bad teeth on your starter, no biggy. You can get a refurbished or a new one for not too much. -

either the start or flywheel.. remove starter and check teeth if all there with little to no damage then flywheel needs to be replaced..
