Question type: Maintenance & Repair

97 Firebird, ran great when purchased, now,
won't run konger than 5 min before stalling and
wont restart. All sensors, and modules were
replaced, even the optispark. Some replaced
twice. Any guesses as to what the issue may
be? I was thinking the fuel sending unit, but not
sure anymore.
No clue what to do anymore besides sell it,
and thata not what I want to happen.

all modules and sensors...guess I did not see that...runs for a while and stalls means either TOO much gas...or too much air/gas ratio~ in this case with the correct information on the temperature sensor should NOT be a problem....unless there are other complications, like a plugged catalytic converter, dirty fuel filter....starved of gas...not drowning in gas...means control of the gas...which the sensor and hardware it drives...do not know..sorry!~

Tell us more about the problem, please. Does it stall when idling or braking or during acceleration? Could be your fuel pump is failing or maybe your fuel filter is not allowing enough flow to accelerate properly. If its a fuel injected engine have the injectors flow tested or otherwise proven to be operating normally. The more you can tell us, the more likely it will be that you get some meaningful advice.

It stalls no matyer what, idleing, getting gas, it jist quits and wont start again. I havent replaced the fuel pump, that was a thoughy, however when it dies, I hear tje fuel pump work, or try to work. I was told it was replaced before I got it, but I kinda have an idea if it was replaced, it was a used one. Wasnt sure if that was the problem, or could be the problem. It was running for 15 min, then 10, then slowly got shorter running time. So it could very well possibly be the pump?

I have a 1993 TA and recently I have been having the same problem. Starts fine cold, then before the engine even gets to normal it dies. It doesn't matter if the car is idling, cruising around the block, or accelerating hard, it dies after a few minutes. I replaced the optispark less than 3k miles ago. That time it died and I replaced the ICM and the coil and still nothing. I ordered a cheap optispark from Rock Auto and it ran fine for a while. Then I drove it 175 miles to Lawton, Oklahoma and it started running really bad. I had to leave it in a parking lot and the next day I managed to limp it over to my brother in law's house. Fortunately he has plenty of covered parking space. I checked the fuel pressure and it dropped off after a few minutes and the car ran rough, so I ordered a fuel pump. I bought a Spectra Premium fuel pump, of course it had a new strainer and I replaced the fuel filter. I had to take the exhaust off from the cat back and drop the rear end to get the fuel tank off. I have only put a few hundred miles on the car since then and it ran just fine, and now the dying after a few minutes. It acts like a bad electrical connection. I say that because when it dies the starter drags slow or will not engage. So I put a new cable end on the cable to the starter and the one to the post on the fender well. The cable from the alternator to the battery was about an 8 guage and it showed definite signs of overheating so I replaced it with a 6 guage. I charged the battery and it checks out fine. I haven't checked the alternator but according to the guage on the dash I show about 14 volts when running. I'm going to replace the ground cables next. This car only has almost 77k miles, not much for a 1993. I have replaced the water pump twice and it is not leaking. I do have a small tear in the rubber boot connecting to the throttle body, but If it's leaking, it's not much and it has been that way for quite some time. So there's my story. Any body with a suggestion of what to try next, I willing to try anything at this time. I put the original ICM back on the car and nothing changed, it dies just like with the replacement one. Maybe the optispark has water in It? But why would it start and rin fine until it just dies. It seems that it is more heat related, but It happens pretty quickly.

After I wrote the post about my 93 TA, I went ahead and ordered another optispark. I bought the Spectra Premium and since then I have not had any problems. Some of the cheaper optispark units aren't worth wasting the time and money on. Being a '93 I have an optispark one and I could find rebuilt OE optispark twos, but not an optispark one. Delco was not offering them at the time and I don't know if they are available now. If they are, that is the best option in my opinion. Second choice would be one made in Japan over anything built in China or elsewhere.

I think most of the problems with the LT1 are related to the optispark distributors. Get a reman Delco if possible. Then purchase anything made in Japan over one made in China or elsewhere. I think some people are rebuilding the original units themselves with Japanese parts and that seems like a good way to go if you want to save a few bucks.
