1999 Bonneville 3800 has very low oil pressure and tapping knock

Asked by carl1954 Dec 24, 2014 at 02:33 AM about the 1999 Pontiac Bonneville 4 Dr SE Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The oil pressure is in the red at idle, but when accelerated it goes up some , even to
about half way up. I also hear what sounds like a tapping on solid metal, not a ping sound
but more of a sound like hitting to solid pieces of hard wood together. What can i expect
to find?

The tapping noise you're hearing may be the hydrualic valve lifters, sometimes called "The tappets" by old timers...... They will make more noise than normal when starving for oil. I recommend having the oil pressure pump checked on your car before you do a lot of internal damage to the engine.
