Just bought a 2000 Pontiac Montana that had a bad battery. I'm trying to hook up a new battery but the horn honks and the fans come on when trying to hook up the second battery cable. Any suggestions?

Before getting the new battery we removed speakers and their auxiliary batteries that the
previous owner had installed behind the rear bench seat.  The additional cables that had
been connected to the positive battery cable were also removed along with the aftermarket
sound system controller that took the place of the standard Pontiac sound system. We
currently do not have a sound system installed.

Additional Information: After removing the fuse controlling the horn, both cables were connected to the battery. Once that was done both fans remained on and all of the lights in the rear of the vehicle were on as well as the turn signals in front. None of the turn signals would flash when using either the turn signal lever or the emergency flasher button. The starter did not fully engage when I tried to start the vehicle (whirring noise but nothing else.)
